25% off the original price
The discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage: discount = price × (percent ÷ 100). The sale price is the original price minus that amount. If you add an extra stacked discount, it's applied to the already-discounted price, not the original — discounts compound multiplicatively, not additively. Sales tax, if entered, is calculated on the final discounted price.
A $60 item at 25% off, with an extra 10% coupon and 7% sales tax:
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal) to get the amount you save, then subtract that from the original price. Example: a $60 item at 25% off — 60 × 0.25 = $15 saved, so the sale price is 60 − 15 = $45. For a quick mental shortcut, find 10% (move the decimal one place left) and scale from there: 10% of $60 is $6, so 25% is $6 × 2.5 = $15.
A stacked discount applies a second percentage off to the already-discounted price, not the original price — this is different from simply adding the two percentages together. A 20% discount followed by an extra 10% off doesn't equal 30% off; it equals paying 90% of 80% of the original price, which works out to 28% total savings, not 30%.
In the US, sales tax is calculated on the discounted price, not the original price — retailers apply tax to what you actually pay. This calculator adds tax after both discounts are applied, which matches standard US point-of-sale practice in nearly every state.
Because the second discount applies to a smaller number. 20% off $100 leaves $80. Taking 10% off that $80 removes $8, leaving $72 — a total discount of 28%, not 30%. Percentage discounts compound multiplicatively, not additively, which is why stacked coupon math often surprises shoppers expecting a bigger combined discount.
The math is the same regardless of the discount size, but large discounts (50%+) are worth double-checking against the item's typical price elsewhere — a steep percentage off an inflated 'original' price isn't necessarily a good deal. This calculator tells you the dollar amount, not whether the original price was fair to begin with.
